Hope Hicks, a former close Trump adviser, takes the witness stand in his hush money trial
Hope Hicks, who served as Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign press secretary, has taken the witness stand in his New York hush money case. Her testimony on the trial’s 11th day is the latest in a frenzied second week of witness testimony. She follows forensic analyst Douglas Daus and paralegal Georgia Longstreet in testifying. Prosecutors say Trump and his associates orchestrated a scheme to buy and bury stories that might hurt his 2016 campaign. He is accused of falsifying internal business records to hide the true nature of those payments. Trump has pleaded not guilty.
Police have cleared pro-Palestinian protesters out of a tent encampment at New York University. The move Friday follows weeks of demonstrations and police confrontations at college campuses nationwide that have resulted in more than 2,300 arrests. About a dozen protesters who refused police orders to leave were arrested early Friday. That's according to NYU spokesperson John Beckman. New York Police Department officers also cleared an encampment at The New School in Greenwich Village. At least two buildings were closed and students were unable to get in for classes. Meanwhile, nine protesters, including seven students, were arrested at the University of Tennessee on Thursday night.
Stocks are rising on Wall Street, erasing the market's losses for the week, after the government reported a cooldown in hiring last month. For markets that was a welcome sign that the Federal Reserve's efforts to fight inflation by slowing the economy with high interest rates might be making some progress. The S&P 500 rose 1.1% in afternoon trading Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 425 points, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 1.9%. U.S. employers added 175,000 jobs last month, down sharply from a blockbuster increase in March. Apple jumped almost 7% after announcing a mammoth $110 billion stock buyback.
Torrential rain is inundating southeastern Texas, forcing schools to cancel classes and closing numerous highways around Houston. The National Weather Service on Friday reported more than 9 inches of rain during the past 24 hours. The agency has issued a flood warning until Tuesday for the region. A flash flood warning is in effect in the area Friday morning. No injuries or deaths have been reported, but officials have reported several people being rescued from high waters. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo on Thursday issued a mandatory evacuation order for people along a portion of the San Jacinto River in northern Harris County. Hidalgo said a school bus carrying children required a rescue after driving into high waters but that everyone on board was safe.
Former longtime Donald Trump adviser Hope Hicks has taken witness stand in his New York hush money criminal trial. Prosecutors are expected to question Hicks on Friday about her knowledge of hush money payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign. Hicks is the first close Trump adviser to testify in the case, which accuses the Republican former president of a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election by silencing women who claimed to have sexual encounters with him. Hicks served as White House communications director in Trump's administration. Trump has denied any wrongdoing.
Water rescues around Houston, evacuation orders widened as flooding from heavy rains over Texas continue.
