Ertel wins at EIAC tourney

Batesville senior Jenna Ertel won her individual flight at the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference tennis meet hosted by Greensburg Saturday. She was first at No. 3 singles, defeating Greensburg's Ellie Acra in the final.

The Lady Bulldogs compete at the South Dearborn sectional starting Wednesday.

Lady Twisters suffer first loss

Playing in a Franklin Community tournament Saturday, Oldenburg Academy's girls tennis team fell 5-0 to the host school – the Twisters' first defeat of the season. OA did down Mt. Vernon (Fortville) by a 3-2 score.

"Both of these teams have very strong programs," said coach Mark Wilder. "Franklin is ranked in the top 18 in the state and we had our chances on a few courts but came up short."

OA (16-1) heads to the South Dearborn sectional Wednesday.

Bulldogs win 7th straight

Batesville varsity baseball ran its win streak to 7 games by defeating Rushville Thursday (8-1) and Jac-Cen-Del Saturday (4-0).

Travis Lecher had a combined 5 hits, 2 RBI and 3 steals. Trey Heidlage had a triple, 3 RBI and 2 steals. Caleb Raab slammed a homer at JCD (2 H) and was winning pitcher at Rushville (complete game; 7 K).

Vs. the Lions, Cal Sherwood had 2 hits, including a double. Seth Gausman and Quinn Werner each had 1 steal and 1 RBI. Against the Eagles, Cooper Williams added 2 hits and a steal, Shane Meer had an RBI and steal. Lane Oesterling locked down JCD for the win and Casey Werner earned a save. Sam Voegele (2) and Brayden Linkel had steals in the 2-game set.

BHS (14-10, 8-4) plays South Dearborn this week to finish EIAC play.

OA baseball wins big

Oldenburg varsity baseball romped over Switzerland County, 16-4, in a road matchup Saturday.

The 13-6-1 Twisters travel to South Ripley May 14.

Lady Twisters dominate Howe

The Oldenburg softball team obliterated host Indianapolis Howe in a Saturday doubleheader, scoring 35 runs to the Hornets' 3. Scores were 15-3 and 20-0.

OA (7-12) visited Seton Catholic Monday.

Pirates top BHS softball

Batesville lost a 12-2 conference matchup at Greensburg Friday in girls varsity softball.

BHS (4-12, 2-10) hosted Connersville Monday.

BMS girls first at own invite

Batesville Middle School girls golf shot a 207 to win the Batesville Invitational Saturday at Cricket Ridge. Greensburg collected a 214, BMS' boys were at 216, Rushville had 220, St. Louis School 226, Franklin County's boys 236 and FC's girls 238.

SLS' Jackson Wanstrath was 4th in the boys division; his scoring teammates were Eli Vogelsang, Rhea Miller and Eli Weiler.

Baseball matchups announced

Opening-round baseball sectional games are set for teams across the state. Batesville will open with Rushville at the South Dearborn sectional; the game is May 23, 7:30 p.m. Oldenburg drew host Jac-Cen-Del; first pitch is May 22, 5 p.m.

Sports betting coming to Hoosiers

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb signed legislation May 8 to soon allow sports wagering at casinos across the state.

Some of the early details include: statewide mobile wagering; tax rate of 9.5 percent of adjusted gross revenue, with a portion allocated to problem gambling; no wagering on esports or amateur athletes under the age of 18; an initial $100,000 fee for a vendor license, followed by $50,000 annual renewal payments; limits on in-play betting and restrictions on data sources are left to the discretion of the Indiana Gaming Commission.
