Family teams triumph at Bulldog Open

The Batesville Athletic Boosters 31st annual Bulldog Open took place Friday, July 26, at Hillcrest Country Club with 52 golfers participating, reports Batesville Community School Corp. athletic director Bryan Helvie.

The four-person team of Doug Wilson, Mona Wilson, Brent Wilson and Todd Wilson placed first with an 18-hole team score of 57. Second place went to Steve McCreary, Madison McCreary, Meredith McCreary and Aaron Nobbe.

The tournament is played as fundraiser for the Batesville Athletic Boosters.

BHS, OA squads lauded for classwork

The Batesville High School and Oldenburg Academy volleyball teams have been named recipients of the 2019 AVCA Team Academic Award. For Batesville, this marks a 10th straight year.

This award honors teams who have matched their dedication to the sport of volleyball with excellence in the classroom. "Meeting the award standards is an accomplishment of which our team can be proud," said BHS coach Kateri Paul.

Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association honored all schools and their coaches at the state clinic Aug 4.

BHS frosh dazzles in links debut

Batesville freshman Emma Weiler began her high school golf career with a pair of impressive medalist performances this week.

Monday, the Bulldogs traveled to Richmond's Elks Country Club and placed fourth behind Franklin County, Richmond and Hagerstown with a score of 419. Weiler shot a 4-over 77, better than the runner-up's 84. Sarah Ronnebaum carded 97, Tori Harpring 114, Chloe Murphy 131 and Madelyn Pohlman 141. FC scorers were led by Camryn Brewer (86).

Four of Monday's teams also competed the next day at Union County. Richmond turned the table on FC, winning by 11 strokes. Weiler fired a 79 as the Bulldogs placed third with 410. Ronnebaum came in at 99, Harpring at 108, Murphy at 124 and Pohlman at 132. Maggie Brack and Gracie Graf paced the FC effort at 85 each and Brewer posted another 86. East Central took 7th, Chursan McLory nearly breaking the triple-digit mark (100).

The Greensburg Invitational is Saturday morning.
