BHS advances in state tourney
The Batesville High School boys’ tennis team shut out its competitors in the first round of Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference play Sept. 25 in Greensburg. BHS team members advanced to the semifinals Sept. 27, but results weren’t available at press time.
In singles competition, Beau Brown defeated Garrett Crowe, Franklin County, 6-0, 6-0. Blake Walsman beat Chris Barnachea, Lawrenceburg, 6-0, 6-0. Ben Schwettman overcame Cole Carmony, Rushville, 6-0, 6-0.
In the doubles games, Spencer Rose and Matthew Taylor rolled over Ryan Howell and Brett Upton, South Dearborn, 6-3, 6-4. Paul Ritter and Harsh Patel defeated Phil Stenger and Connor Paul 6-1, 6-3.
Lady Bulldogs beaten at Greenfield Challenge
The Batesville High School volleyball team went 1-3 against some tough competition Sept. 27 at the Greenfield Cougar Challenge, reported coach Jody Thomas. The team placed sixth of nine teams, posting a 1-1 record in pool play and 0-2 in the second place crossover matches.
Batesville dropped to Lebanon 23-25, 18-25. The Lady Bulldogs had 13 kills on 41 attempts, four aces and 21 digs, seven by Kim Tidman. They beat Paoli 25-14, 25-13. The Lady Bulldogs recorded 42 attempts with 18 kills, seven by Tidman, 10 aces, plus 25 digs. In the third game, they lost to Mount Vernon 25-23, 9-25, 4-15. They posted 17 kills on 57 attempts, plus 36 digs. Finally, they fell to Plainfield 15-25, 21-25 with 16 kills on 58 attempts, six by Tidman, plus 31 digs, eight by Katie Thomas and six by Tidman.
Thomas, Batesville’s own No. 12, continued the BHS tradition of having at least one player chosen for the all-tourney team, as voted by the coaches.
OA girls top UC
The 11th-ranked Oldenburg Academy girls’ soccer team took on Union County High School 8-1 Sept. 25 in The Graveyard. The Twisters came out quickly and were able to put seven goals on the board in the first half. Haleigh Reed scored at 30:47 from 22 yards out. Olivia Lewis put one in the net at 30:23, Kirsten Ricke at 25:43 and Sarah Wilder at 24:52. Ava Geers scored at 19:06 off an assist from Elizabeth Schulte, and Schulte at 18:14 assisted by Ricke. Andrea Rinck finished the first half scoring at :15 with an assist from Schulte.
In the second half, Union County scored with 37:47 left in the second half by Megan Abbott. But OA’s Erica Geers put one more on the board at 17:49 on an assist from Angela Wanstrath.
“Union County has only had a soccer program for a few years,” said coach Kendra Getz, “so they are building. But this was a great opportunity for my underclassmen. The girls played really well, and we are gearing up for sectionals in two weeks.”
Reed now has 12 goals on the year, and Ricke has eight assists. OA improves to 11-3.
The season’s last regular game will be played at Lawrenceburg High School at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1.
