Oldenburg Academy’s boys varsity tennis team traveled to Hancock County Sept. 28 to participate in the Eastern Hancock High School Invitational against the host Royals, Lapel, and Blackford High.
Scoring 31 points, the Twisters won the tournament in a tune-up for postseason play. Lapel totaled 17 points and EHHS 12. Blackford failed to win a match.
Michael Wanstrath (No. 1 singles), Riley Schebler (No. 2), Drew Wagner (No. 3) and the No. 2 doubles team of Jon Grieshop and Ethan Back each went 2-0 on the day, receiving individual medals.
Wanstrath defeated Blackford’s Straton Stone in the first round, 6-0, 6-0, then went the distance against EH’s Kodey Huff (3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-5 super tiebreaker).
Schebler breezed by Lapel’s Will Rector 6-2, 6-1 before knocking off the Royals’ Nolan Stout, 6-1, 6-3.
Wagner was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over E. Hancock’s Zeke Dixon; he later downed Lapel’s Asher Evelo, 6-0, 6-1.
Back and Grieshop got past the Royals’ Bryce Wennen and Sam Blocher by a 6-2, 6-2 count. A 6-2, 6-0 win followed over Lapel’s Trevor Whaley and Cam Gooding.
Jacob Sheets and Patrick Thompson shut out Gavin Wolfgang and Jace Keplinger of Blackford, 6-0, 6-0. In the No. 1 doubles finals, Lapel’s Corbin Renihan and Nick Thalls won 6-4, 7-5.
OA faced Milan Thursday at the South Dearborn sectional. Results were not available at press time. A win would place the Twisters in Saturday morning’s finals.
