On Feb. 6, the St. Louis School Lady Cardinals seventh- and eighth-grade basketball teams traveled to Sunman-Dearborn Middle School.

The seventh-grade team lost 18-34, said coach Erin Trenkamp. “We had a great first half and held them 8-15. But that was just not enough for us to get the win. Scoring for SLS were McKenzie Maple with 10 points and Lucy Abplanalp and Ainsley Sipples both with 4 points. We did a nice job defensively of stopping the shots and getting rebounds off the board. Nice job ladies.”

The eighth-graders pulled off a win against SDMS with a final score of 52-10. “We were able to get all 10 players a bucket of some kind to put them all on the scoring side,” the coach revealed. Points scored included Claire Saner, 16; Catherine Streator and Kate Weber, 8 each; Lilly Schebler, 6pts; Ava Owens, Izza Wonnell and Lea Cossentino, 3 each; Madison Wanstrath and Rhea Miller, 2 each; and Sadie Wachsmann, 1.

“We really did a nice job of finding everyone and working the ball. Our press was a key to getting us to a point to be able to do this for our team. Nice work ladies for a show of selflessness and teamwork for sure.”

The girls played at South Ripley Feb. 3. “While we came out with a split ending, it was a good night of basketball,” Trenkamp noted.

“For the seventh-grade game, we weren’t able to take home the win, but did learn a lot from this game.” The final score was 13-50. Scoring were Abplanalp with 10 points and Maple with 3. “We shut down a couple girls looking to score for South Ripley and managed to keep them from scoring points. Sipples worked super hard on defense, making sure this was the case. Nice game ladies.”

The eighth-grade Lady Cards won their game 46-20. Scoring for SLS were Weber with 18 points; Saner with 10; Streator, 8; Wachsmann, 4; and Schebler, Owens, and Miller, 2 each. “Rebounding and moving the ball in fast transition up the court was a key role in this game. Nice job ladies.”

On Feb. 1, the eighth-grade girls traveled to St. Bart for a tournament. “Overall we came in as the runners-up against some good competition. In Game 1, we played St. Bart and in the championship game we played St. Charles.

“We won against St. Bart with a final score of 50-15.” Scoring for SLS were Weber, 10 points; Streator, 9; Saner, 7; Wanstrath, 6; Miller, Schebler and Wachsmann, 4; Wonnell, 3; Owens, 1. “They played a great game and advanced to the champ game following this one,” Trenkamp reported.

“In the championship game we played St. Charles, Bloomington. While we weren’t able to pull off the win against this polished team, we had fun playing them.” The final score was 28-52. Scoring for SLS were Saner and Weber, 8 points each; Streator, 7; Miller, 3; and Wachsmann, 2. “We pulled a lot away from this game, and our girls played a great game overall.”
