It was so true, Batesville’s head cross country coach had to repeat it twice.
“What an incredible day!” said Lisa Gausman after she watched her squads run excellent races at Saturday’s (Oct. 19) Franklin Community regional. “Yes, it was incredible.”
For the first time in school history, the Lady Bulldogs claimed a regional championship, doing so by an impressive 31-point advantage. The Bulldog boys were third overall, meaning they also advanced as a team to this Saturday’s semistate hosted by Shelbyville. No fewer than seven Bulldogs were named All-Regional.
A pair of Oldenburg Academy boys, Dylan Fledderman and Tyler Kuntz, also lived to see another week in the postseason.
BHS sophomore Lily Pinckley set a new school record as her runner-up finish of 19:02 came in just behind Greensburg standout Brenner Hanna (18:46).
Gausman described the team dynamic in the girls competition.
“They scored a low 53 points,” she said of her girls. “It was close with Center Grove for the first mile, but in the second mile, the Bulldogs put themselves in position to win and never looked back.”
CG had 84, Whiteland 92, Franklin 101 and Greensburg took the last advancing spot with 117 points.
Freshman Ava Hanson was the next Bulldog to cross (5th; 19:33). Also all-regional were Maria Lopez (10th; 20:14) and freshman Madison Rahschulte (16th; 20:37). The latter two were personal bests.
In the boys race, no one could catch Center Grove, who won with a solid 31. BHS came in behind the host Grizzly Cubs (60-84). Whiteland was next (123), followed by Greenwood (156).
BHS senior Adam Moster came in 6th (personal best 16:15). Joining him as all-regional were sophomore Ean Loichinger (10th; 16:34) and senior Joshua Myers (15th; 16:49).
Sophie Myers was 26th for the Lady Dogs (21:10), followed closely by senior Liz Loichinger in 32nd (21:21) and Trysta Vierling in 35th (21:31).
Benjamin Moster was 24th (17:26) as Bulldog teammate Daren Smith followed him in 36th (17:47). Dillon Murray was 44th (18:08), followed closely by Nathan Villani in 46th (personal best 18:11).
OA’s boys team placed 6th with 178 points. Kuntz was 14th (16:46) and Fledderman 20th (17:18). Senior Aaron Weber was 37th (17:50), Peter Heile 58th (18:36), Carson Wolber 81st (20:02) and Carter Walsman 84th (20:11). Whiteland’s Will Jefferson won the boys race in a time of 15:44.
OA’s Sarah Price was 74th in the girls run (23:58).
Other area runners competing this Saturday are Lanie Nicholson (South Ripley), Hannah Morgan (Lawrenceburg), Rachel Campbell, Emilee Wedding and Michael Schwebach (East Central), Rachel Rohe (South Dearborn), Damon Hughes (Jac-Cen-Del) and Andrew Johnson and Hunter Butz (Greensburg).
The semistate races will take place at Blue River Memorial Park, the boys starting out at 10:30 a.m. and the girls following at 11:15.
