The Batesville High School Track and Field team opened up their indoor season March 7 as they competed at the East Central Indoor Invitational. This was not a team scored event, but a chance for the kids to compete to try to qualify for the Indoor State meet at Indiana University March 28. Athletes will earn qualifications if their times or distances are in the top 24 around the state by March 21.

“There were some really great performances to kick off the 2020 season on Saturday, including several personal bests and a new meet record. J.J. Kuisel broke a meet record held since 2007 in the 400 meter dash by .61 of a second. J.J. ran a 55.23, beating the field by over a second,” reported coach Lisa Gausman.

Other first-place finishes for the day were Gabe Gunter, jumping a personal best in high jump (6’1”) and vaulting a personal best (11 ft.) in the pole vault, and the boys 4x800 relay team, consisting of Ean Loichinger, Nathan Villani, Will Nuhring and Kuisel (9:09.94). Liz Loichinger also beat a field of 35 runners in the 800 (2:39.7).

Second-place finishers were Justin Heiser, long jump (19’4”); Ean Loichinger, 800 (2:14.8); 776 sprint medley relay of Willy Sherwood, Brayden Linkel, Gunter and Heiser (1:45.03); and 4x400 relay teams of Vonley Hund, Ean Loichinger, Nuhring and Gunter (4:02.92) and Katie Olsen, Carley Pride, Liz Loichinger and Madelyn Pohlman (4:46.53).

Placing third were Kent Meyer, high jump; 4x800 relay of Olsen, Maria Lopez, Ava Hanson and Liz Loichinger; and 4x400 relay of Lizzy Nobbe, Lopez, Roxanne Hund and Hanson.

Madelyn Pohlman captured fourth-place in the 400.

Fifth-place finishers were Kent Meyer, pole vault; Trysta Vielring, 3200; and 776 sprint medley team of Lizzy Nobbe, Makayla Granger, Jada Eisert and Nadine Davis.

Placing sixth were Heiser, 200; Pride, high jump; Olsen, 800; Madison Rahschulte, 3200m; 4x800 relay team of Adam Hollowell, Dillon Murray, Kyler Daulton and Daren Smith; and 4x400 relay team of Sherwood, Villani, Smith and Nuhring.

Seventh-place finishers were Heiser, 55; Roxanne Hund, 55 hurdles; Lopez, 800; and 776 sprint medley team of Vonley Hund, Jylil Chappell, Thomas Hartman and Chase Hamilton.

Pride placed eighth in the 400.

Performing personal bests for the day were Hamilton and Georgie Doll in shot put, Gunter in high jump and Heiser in long jump.

Batesville will travel to UIndy next Saturday, March 14, for a much bigger invitational to try and qualify for the indoor state, the coach revealed.
