Becky Simmermeyer and Stephanie Wirth, Immaculate Conception Academy seniors, were semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Corp. competition.

The Southeastern Career Center, Versailles, had an enrollment of about 725 students in the 18 program areas that were offered. Many were filled to capacity.

Dick Feller, Feller’s Service Station owner, was the first retailer in Batesville to become certified to sell Indiana lottery tickets.

Movies shown at the Gibson Theatre included “Honeymoon Hotel,” “Looking for Love” and “Bedtime Story.”

Two college credit courses, beginning algebra and materials processes, were offered by Purdue University at Batesville High School.

75 years ago

A junior chamber of commerce was organized in Batesville with the purpose to provide the younger business and professional men of the city a medium for training in citizenship; promote the civic, industrial and educational activities of the community; and cooperate with existing organizations in furthering the general welfare of Batesville.

Several area students attended various colleges and universities. Dorothy Davis, Huber Poske, Robert Stewart, Charles Gibson, Arthur Mueller and Edward Merchen, Indiana University; Alvin Meyers, Bob Schultz, Emory Stockinger and Celtus Foley, Purdue University; Cecil Brunner, Arthur Miller and Wilbur Huber, Wabash College; John Gelvin, Lloyd Beck and Marvin Reed, DePauw University; Carl Beck and Clarence Huber, University of Illinois; Marie Green, Ball State Teachers College; Raymond Bloemer, University of Cincinnati; Nicky Moorman, Ohio Mechanics Institute, Cincinnati; John Kile, Indiana State Teachers College, Terre Haute; Norma Kessens, Littleford-Nelson Business College, Cincinnati; and Harold Sieg, Southern Ohio Business College, Cincinnati.

Batesville High School’s enrollment for the 1939-40 school year was 281 students. The faculty and teaching staff included superintendent R.H. Prentice, principal E.P. Cassidy, Kathryn Woodfill, Nora Wonning, Vivian Burnworth, Marie McCrory, Alice Wilson, Sylvester Bartling, John Frushour, Harold Anson, James Lee and Kermit Todd.
