Crime scene tape was placed at the scene of the officer-involved shooting as investigators arrived.

Indiana State Police and Dearborn County Sheriff's Department officers responded to a disturbance reportedly involving a man armed with a firearm Saturday, Jan. 12, at about 10:50 a.m. at 12300 Five Point Road east of Sunman and just north of Hubbells Corner in northern Dearborn County, said ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Versailles District public information officer.

When DCSD Deputy Brian Weigel and ISP Trooper Jordan Craig arrived and started to approach the man's residence, they were confronted by Christopher Schmitt, 58, who pointed a firearm at them. "This resulted in both officers firing their weapons at the suspect," according to Wheeles.

Schmitt was struck by at least one of the officers' rounds. The officers were not injured in the incident.

They were able to render immediate first aid to Schmitt and he was quickly transported to Margaret Mary Health, Batesville, for medical treatment. After arriving at the hospital, Schmitt was pronounced deceased.

The public information officer reported that Craig is a three-year Indiana State Police veteran and Weigel has been an officer with the Dearborn County Sheriff's Department for over a year.

Detectives from the Indiana State Police Sellersburg District will be leading the investigation.

Once it has concluded, a report will be forwarded to the Dearborn County Prosecutor's Office for review.
