Indiana State Police and the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle crash Saturday, Sept. 28, at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Legion Road south of Batesville that resulted in the death of a Batesville youth, reported ISP Versailles District public information officer Sgt. Stephen Wheeles.
The initial investigation by Trooper Matt Holley of the Indiana State Police Versailles District Crash Reconstruction Team indicated that a white 2003 Dodge Ram, being driven by Caleb Zapfe, 16, Batesville, was traveling westbound on Legion Road near County Road 200 East in Ripley County.
For an unknown reason, the vehicle left the road’s south side. Zapfe then overcorrected, causing the vehicle to leave the road’s north side before overturning.
A passenger in his vehicle, Kaleb Norton, 17, Batesville, was ejected from the truck. Norton sustained fatal injuries in the crash. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Ripley County Coroner’s Office.
Norton was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, said Wheeles.
Zapfe sustained nonlife-threatening injuries.
Indiana State Police also were assisted by the Batesville Police Department and Ripley County EMS.
