The newly-formed Batesville Junior Red Cross has helped with its first area disaster, reports adviser Fern Baumer.

The Toby and Patricia Gilbert family recently lost their home due to a fire in the Peppertown area.  According to Baumer, “They have three children in the Batesville school corporation.”  Members decided to aid this family with help from two local businesses, Oldenburg’s Village Store and Schmidt Bakery, where they set up booths to take donations.

The group wants to express a big thanks to the businesses and their customers, who donated over $500 Saturday morning, Oct. 28.

The sponsor says the young volunteers are coming up with fundraising ideas to help those afflicted by disasters.

They are also currently going through training in CPR and first aid.  Members also are in the process of initiating a president, vice president and secretary.

So far members include Jake Baumer, Jordan Bedel, Kara Doll, Lindsay Gunter, Jonathan Krekeler, Jen Meyer, Kristy Meyer, Nancy Narwold, Kristin Lamping, Brooke Straber, B.J. Swain and president Dan Wessel.

Any interested high school students who want to volunteer can call Fern Baumer at 934-6460.
