Austin Westerfeld is the 2014 recipient of the Frank W. Braden Scholarship from DePauw University.
The scholarship covers full tuition, room and board and book allowance for four years. Selection was based on academic performance and personal merit, including ambition, work history, life objectives, goals and leadership potential.
Westerfeld will graduate from Batesville High School June 7, where he was a member of Key Club, a four-year letterman in baseball and a three-year letterman in football in which he was Academic All State his senior season. At DePauw, he will study economics in preparation for law school and will play baseball.
He is the son of Doug and Vanessa Westerfeld, New Point; grandchild of Jeff and Kitty Smith, Greensburg, and Gene and Jenny Westerfeld, New Point; and great-grandchild of Norma Smith Bruner, Greensburg.
Frank Braden was a resident of Decatur County and a 1923 graduate of DePauw University. He established a $1.2 million trust upon his death to provide scholarships for deserving students from Decatur County to attend DePauw University.
