Gabrielle Mungcal’s future plans include attending the University of Notre Dame and probably majoring in biology.

“I want to become a doctor ... to be able to give back to the community that has given me so much and to be able to make a difference in the world around me. I promised my community that I would make them proud, and I intend to keep that promise.”

The daughter of Noel and Luna Mungcal, Greensburg, has a brother, Liam, 15. She is the 2014 Decatur County Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

Fondest memories: My freshman year, I was mistaken for an exchange student quite a bit. I have so many amusing stories regarding that little mishap. But beyond that, there are a lot of things that have happened over the last four years that I hope I’ll always remember and hold dear: playing “Rhapsody in Blue” in the orchestra my freshman year and getting to play my two-measure solo; becoming a murderous old woman in “Arsenic and Old Lace” and getting the coveted last bow; in physics, finding the attraction (purely gravitational, of course) between Susie and Dave on the dance floor; performing as Granny from “The Beverly Hillbillies” my junior year and smothering everyone with my sass; watching as almost all of the boys in the backstage hallway broke out in impromptu karaoke to Weird Al’s “Amish Paradise”; and, of course, just being with all of my wonderful friends, classmates and teachers in general.

Influential teachers: There’s Mrs. (Linda) Ortman, all the way back when I was in eighth grade. Not only was she just a fantastic person in general, but she truly laid down the foundation for my math skills, and I don’t know what I would have done without her. In high school, there are three. Mr. (John) Armbruster taught me in both chemistry and physics. His classes made learning science fun and insightful and also helped me to know for certain that science was something that I wanted to be involved with my whole life. Mrs. (Janey) Stephens: I know that I wouldn’t be able to write half as well nor be half as good at correctly using pronoun antecedent agreement without her. Ms. (Kris) Wampler helped both my love of music and my skills to grow tremendously, and, because of her, never will I be able to pronounce “composer” (com-POE-ser) the same way ever again.
