Ericka Burchfield counts traveling to places like Anaheim, California, and Charlotte, North Carolina, with Family, Career and Community Leaders of America as her fondest high school memories.
FCCLA is also one of her favorite school activities because “it has taught me how to be a leader. I have been fortunate enough to serve as a state officer for the past two years and have gotten to train other students to be leaders. I have learned public speaking and professionalism skills, along with meeting lots of new people.
“We also participate in various community service projects, including a fashion show for diabetes awareness that I co-chaired, along with raking leaves for the elderly, making blankets for Project Linus and hosting a dance for Special Olympics students. It is amazing to see the good that you can do for others with a few simple acts.”
Favorite educator: Mrs. Brenda Osman because she has been my FCCLA adviser for the past six years and has allowed me to run for various offices and has supported me and traveled with me to various places across the state and country.
Extracurriculars: National Honor Society, Top Mentors, French Club, St. Teresa Youth Group, volunteer at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, TAP MD program from the Greater Cincinnati Health Council (provides lots of job shadowing opportunities for students interested in becoming physicians)
Awards: Dearborn County Lilly finalist, UC Cincinnatus Scholarship
Future goals: I will attend the University of Cincinnati and major in chemistry. I hope to continue on to medical school eventually ... (and) become a physician. I would love to travel to underprivileged countries and help with their medical care. I feel that since I am so fortunate to live where I do, I should give back to others who don’t have as much as I do.
