Program celebrates academic excellence

Over 100 students were recognized during the 6th Congressional District Eighth-Grade Scholars Program June 6 at the Batesville High School auditorium.

The event, sponsored by Hillenbrand Inc., “celebrated academic excellence and the students who achieved it,” said Chris Lowery, HI public policy and engagement director. The top male and female eighth-grade students from each school in the district were honored. There was not any specific criteria to determine who would be recognized. That was left to the principals’ discretion.

The director told the group, “Your challenge is to continue to be disciplined in your habits of study and be interested in things others say are just not possible .... When the choice is getting an A in a regular course or a B in an honors course, make the tough choice.”

The honorees were very excited. Maddy Ketcham, St. Nicholas School, Sunman, expressed how the students were feeling: “Special and grateful about getting noticed by my school.”

Lindsay Bischoff, Sunman-Dearborn Middle School, St. Leon, agreed, “I work hard for my grades, and it’s nice to get some recognition.”

Joseph Barr, Batesville Middle School, pointed out, “This honor proves you have the ability to stand out among your peers.”

Nathan Batta, St. Louis School, was happy with the award. “It can help me get jobs and get into a good college.”

Katelyn Ertel, St. Nicholas School, admitted, “I feel very special and definitely feel smart now. I’ll try to keep excelling in what I do at East Central High School next year.”

Matthew Kuebel announced he was anxious to meet U.S. Congressman Luke Messer, who was the guest speaker.

The representative emphasized, “The No. 1 thing you can do to do well in life is to do well in school .... There is no dream you can dream that is too big.”
