Snigdha Mendra-Bapu, a Batesville Intermediate School fifth-grade student, will be advancing to the WCPO Regional Spelling Bee which is part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The daughter of Mom-Neeharika Nagabhyru and Phanidhar Mendra Bapu earned the champion title Jan. 20 when she won the school spelling bee. Last year, she was the runner-up.
After claiming the title, Mendra-Bapu then had to pass an online test administered by WCPO in order to advance to the regional finals. She will be competing with 58 students in grades 4-8 from the Tristate area. The regional bee will take place Feb. 22 at the School for Creative & Performing Arts, Cincinnati. The winner of that contest will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., with all expenses paid.
The BIS runner-up was fifth-grader Kavin Saravanan.
