Lady Bulldogs win ninth straight title

After rallying from a two set deficit to knock off Lawrenceburg in the opening round of the sectional, the Batesville Lady Bulldogs were heavy favorites to sweep their next two matches to claim the championship.

The test against Lawrenceburg was nearly more than the Lady Bulldogs could handle, but they escaped and went on to claim their ninth consecutive sectional title two days later.

The Franklin County Lady Wildcats were the first victims on Saturday in the semifinals.

The host Lady Bulldogs were 25-8, 25-21 and 25-11 winners.

Rushville climbed out of the other bracket with a victory over South Dearborn to earn a berth against Batesville in the finals.

The outcome of the championship match was never really in question.

The two teams traded points early in the first set before Batesville established their aggressive attack and began to score in bunches. The first set ended with the Lady Bulldogs winners by 11 points.

The second set went to the Lady Bulldogs by a score of 25-16 and the third was even easier at 25-11.

Rylee Goldsmith, Bailey Baumer and Katie Thomas anchored the serving efforts for the Lady Bulldogs. As a team, they were quite efficient serving at 97.2 percent.

The Lady Lions did not have much of an answer for countering the BHS attack at the net, especially when it came to defending Baumer. Baumer finished with a team high 15 kills in 27 attacking attempts.

Defensively, the Bulldogs were led by Goldsmith and Chelsey Paul with 13 digs apiece, while Alyssa Dudley had 12.

The Lady Bulldogs will next be in action on Tuesday, Oct. 29, when the host Brownstown Central for the regional title match. The match is schedule to begin at 7 p.m.
