Twisters edge Lions 3-2

The Oldenburg Academy varsity tennis team slipped past the Rushville Lions by a score of 3-2.

The outcome was not determined until late in the evening. Two of the five matches went three sets.

The Twisters picked up an early win at No. 1 doubles. Nick Bischoff and Sam Gast teamed up to beat 6-0 and 6-1 win over Michael St. John and Brandon Slaton.

After losing the opening set at No. 2 and 3 singles, Oldenburg’s Luke Hammoor and Calvin Shenk battled back for wins.

Shenk dropped the first set 6-2 to Will Hogsett at No. 3 singles then bounced back to win the second 6-2. The third set was a lot like the second with Shenk winning 6-3.

Rushville’s Paul Hershberger edged Luke Hammoor in the first set at No. 2 singles, but then fell 6-2 in the second. The two players fought to the end in the third before the OA senior came out on top 7-5. Hammoor trailed 5-2 in the final set before winning five consecutive games.

Rushville victories were recorded by Jake Fowler at No. 1 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Adam Martin and Andrew Rice. Fowler defeated Josh Hollingsworth 7-5 and 6-0, while Martin and Rice beat Nathan Hubert and Clay Hunger 6-2 and 6-2.
