Twisters score only goal in win

The Oldenburg Academy boys soccer team picked up an impressive win in its first outing of the season.

It has been six years since Lawrenceburg last came to Oldenburg Academy for a soccer. The Tigers were sent home with a 1-0 loss to the host Twisters.

“Lawrenceburg always has a good squad and this year is no different,” OA head coach Ken Getz commented. “They like to attack from the middle out to their flanks where they have a lot of speed.

“We had some trouble with this early on as they had some great scoring chances in the first 10 minutes. I thought that our defense did a better job as the game went along containing there runs,” he added.

Daniel Mullen, Hayden Johnson and Taylor Reed manned the middle of the field and got us just enough offense on the night to preserve the win, according to Getz.

Ted Geis scored at the 17:30 mark of the second period on a header in the middle of the penalty area. Josh Kinker got the assist on a restart about 35 yards out. The Twisters had 13 shots with five on goal.

Jeremy Kelnhofer had nine saves.

Matty Hurm had a defensive save. He knocked the equalizer away in the second half just in front of the goal line, according to Getz. “We talk about this all of the time if you get beat on the defensive end don’t give up and depend on your keeper to save you. Hustle back and do what you can to help and Matty did just that,” he noted.

Jeremy Kelnhofer played a solid game in goal. Kelnhofer finished with nine saves and picked up his first varsity shutout in his first game as a keeper.

The coach also credited Luke Weisenbach with a solid game on defense.
