OA football kicks off at Trinity Lutheran

The Oldenburg Academy era for football began Friday night with a scrimmage at Trinity Lutheran.

And it was mostly a good start to the season.

“We are pleased with the effort, but obviously not satisfied,” OA head coach Wes Gillman commented. “The great thing about getting after it in a controlled scrimmage is seeing what we do well and what we need work on.

“We will make adjustments and continue to grow as a team,” he added.

The Twisters had several kids who stepped up and made big plays, according to Gillman.

“Quarterback Matt Moorman took charge of the offense rushing for two touchdowns and threw for another,” Gillman commented. “He also intercepted two passes from his safety position.

Gillman was also pleased with his receivers.

“Bryce Ahaus made a phenomenal catch in the corner of the end zone,” Gillman commented. “ Tyler Hesselbrock, Dominic Cigolotti, and Jason Kline also had receptions on the evening.

“Luke Roberts ran extremely hard from his tailback position. He had holes to

run through at times and made the most of broken plays,” he added.

The offensive line was anchored by Decker Horninger, Brady Sterchi, Bobby Ash, Zach Pottschmidt, and RyneDomingo.

“Defensively, we held our own,” Gillman noted. “Trinity Lutheran had most of their yardage on the ground. I attribute that to their experienced offensive line. We could have done a much better job of open field tackling, but that’s something we will work on.”

The Twisters will open the regular season this Friday when they travel to Indianapolis Shortridge. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
