Golf season comes to a close for area players

A  successful season came to a close on Saturday for the Batesville High School girls golf teams.

The Lady Bulldogs placed eighth in an 18-team field at the New Castle Regional held at Westwood Golf Club.

Rains the night before and a swirling wind during play made conditions difficult and it was reflected in the scores.

Still, the Lady Bulldogs held their own in a field that included the top three ranked teams in the state.

“I was very pleased with our finish,” BHS head coach Tom Meyer commented. “I went in thinking top 10 would be great and we would have to play really well to reach eighth.

“The playing conditions were tough and the scores were higher than normal, but I was really happy with the way they handled it,” he added.

The Lady Bulldogs finished with a team score of 389 strokes, which was only six behind Hagerstown in seventh.

Madison McCreary led the Lady Bulldogs with an 18-hole score of 87. After hitting her tee shot out of bounds on the opening hole (No. 10), McCreary settled down and went two-over-par on the next four holes, including a birdie on the par 5, 14th hole. The Batesville sophomore finished with a 44 on the first nine and a 43 on the second, which was the courses front nine.

Like her teammate, Mary Fegley got off to a slow start. Despite losing 10 strokes to par of the first three holes, the BHS senior played the final six level par, including a birdie on the par 4, 15th hole. Fegley finished with a 46 on the first nine and 52 on the front for a 98.

Alex Heidlage was third on the team with a 100 followed by Lauren Duncan (104) and Staci Records (132).  Heidlage finished with three pars over the 18 holes.

The state’s No. 1 ranked Yorktown Lady Tigers won the team title with a score of 321. Kennedy Windlan led her team to the championship with a medalist score of 68, which was four-under-par.
