Oldenburg Academy wins sectional title with Batesville a close second

A team can be favored to win an event on paper, but that does not bring home any hardware.

The Oldenburg Academy Lady Twisters backed up their No. 24 ranking with a victory at the South Dearborn cross country sectional Tuesday evening.

Senior Sarah Billingsley ran away from the field to lead OA with an individual title. She crossed the finish line in a winning time of 18:32. The closest competitor was a minute and 20 seconds behind.

The Lady Twisters placed four other runners in the top 10 to finish with a team score of 29 points.

Meredith Maier was third with a time of 20:06 with teammate Rachel Billingsley three place back in sixth and a time of 20:29. Rounding out the top five for OA were Ashley Sedley (20:49) and Kirsten Ricke (20:51) in ninth and 10th, respectively.

Other runners for Oldenburg included Haleigh Reed (12th) and Madelyn Maier (19th).

The Batesville Lady Bulldogs provided the most competition for the Lady Twisters. Coach Lisa Gausman's crew finished in second place with 45 points, which was 16 behind the winners.

Batesville junior Kelsey Gausman set the pace for the Lady Bulldogs with a fifth place finish and a time of 20:24.

Senior Grace Yeaton and freshman Mary Poltrack were not far behind to give the Lady Bulldogs three spots in the Top 10. Yeaton was seventh in the field of 66 runners with a time of 20:44, while Poltrack was right behind in 20:45.

Rounding out the top five runners for the Lady Bulldogs were Sarah Poltrack and Maria Wessel. Poltrack was 11th with a time of 21:05 followed in 14th by Wessel with a mark of 21:45.

Kylie Lehman (28th) and Breanna Hartman (35th) rounded out the runners for Batesville.

The East Central Lady Trojans were fifth in the team competition behind Greensburg and South Dearborn.

Carolyn Priebe led EC with a 23rd place and a time of 22:55. Andrea Shugar (24th), Alexis Floyd (32nd), Jenna Wernke (34th) and Alexis Schoenfield (36th) rounded out the top five for the Lady Trojans.

The top 10 individuals from non‐advancing teams and the first five qualifying teams from each sectional advance to Greensburg Regional.
