Bulldogs lose in semifinals to No. 2 Greensburg

BATESVILLE — The basketball season came to a disappointing close for the Batesville Bulldogs Friday night in the Class 3A sectional semifinals at Greensburg.

A full house watched the No. 2 Greensburg Pirates knock off the No. 8 Batesville Bulldogs in a much anticipated third meeting between the two rivals - the two teams split the first two meetings.

The Pirates defeated the visiting Bulldogs by a score of 77-65.

“It is a tough way to end the season,” BHS head coach Aaron Garrett commented. “Greensburg has a talented group of players and we knew it would be a good game.

“I am very proud of these young men ... their preparation, hard work, and effort all season and especially leading up to the tournament was outstanding,” he added.

Three scoring streaks were key for the Pirates proved to be the difference in the game. Greensburg had a 10-0 run in the second quarter, 10-0 run in the third quarter and a 10-2 run in the fourth quarter.

Batesville came out strong and grabbed an 11-4 lead. Three-pointers by Kassidy Kase and Quinn Grimsley put the Bulldogs on top by seven with 4:13 to play in the quarter. The Pirates cut the deficit to one on back-to-back Macy Holdsworth triples. A Kase 3-pointer had the Bulldogs on top 16-11 after one quarter.

After Mike Hoeing hit a 3-pointer to start the second quarter, the Pirates went on a 10-0 run. Collin Rigney’s 3-pointer started the run and Ryan Welage’s bucket capped the streak to give the Pirates a 21-19 lead. Two Bryan Hoeing 3-pointers had the Bulldogs on top 25-24 at the half.

After the Bulldogs took a 30-24, the Pirates went on another 10-0 run. McIntosh, Sean Sellers and Ryan Welage led the Greensburg attack. After three quarters, the Pirate held a 48-42 advantage.

In the exciting fourth quarter, the Bulldogs fought back from a double- digit deficit to cut the Pirate lead to 62-57. Greensburg then put the game out of reach with a 10-2 run. Two Welage free throws started the run and Sellers capped it with a bucket as the Pirates led 72-59.

Bryan Hoeing led all scorers with 32 points. Sellers led the Pirates with 19 points. McIntosh had 18 followed by Welage 15, Holdsworth 12 and Rigney

The Bulldogs finished the season with a record of 19-3.

The Pirates (21-1) take on Madison for the sectional crown. The Cubs defeated Rushville 62-52 in the first semifinal.
