Lady Twisters edge Batesville 3-2 in the sectional opener

BATESVILLE — It could not have been any closer and the matches any more equally played.

The Oldenburg Academy Lady Twisters advanced to the second round of the South Dearborn tennis sectional with a 3-2 victory over the Batesville Lady Bulldogs.

Ella Lamping and Anya Smith battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the third set to knock off Batesville sophomores Kelli Hartman and Brooke Bradford in a third set tie-breaker at No. 2 doubles. Lamping and Smith withstood one match point by the Lady Bulldogs late in the third set en route to a 6-1, 4-6 and 7-6 victory.

After losing the first set, the Lady Bulldogs bounced back themselves to win the second to force a third and deciding set. “I was impressed the entire match with their poise and play,” BHS head coach Bryan Helvie commented. “Brooke and Kelli did an outstanding job to fight their way back into the match and put themselves in a position that did not seem likely over the first 30 minutes of the match.

“They gave it everything they had and that is all we ask of any of them,” he added.

There was a lot of good tennis played the entire match.

The Lady Twisters picked up early victories at No. 1 and 2 singles.

Gretchen Wilder turned in a very solid effort to beat Batesville’s Ali Meyer at No. 1 singles, while sister Sarah Wilder was a straight set winner over sophomore Lydia Olsen.

The Bulldogs knotted the team scored at 2-2 with victories at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles. Sarah Hoseus defeated Oldenburg’s Claire Dickey in two sets, while Emily Helvie and Ellen Heppner were stretched to three sets before putting away Ivy Glaser and Hannah Hanauer at first doubles.

“Unfortunately, we came up a little bit short as a team, but I could not be any more proud of the way the girls battled the entire night,” Helvie commented.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the season with a record of 9-5, while the Lady Twisters advanced to the second round to play East Central.
