BHS and EC tennis players win conference titles

— The East Central Lady Trojans and Batesville Lady Bulldogs dominated the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference tennis tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Trojans were in all but one of the position finals and came away with three conference champions. Batesville was in the final in all fiveand managed two champions and three all-conference honors.

Batesville sophomore Lydia Olsen defeated Greensburg’s Kaeli Fong by a score of 6-2 and 6-1 to claim the top honor at No. 2 singles. After drawing a first round bye, Olsen was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Lawrenceburg’s Sydney Romines in the semifinals.

Sarah Hoseus avenged an earlier season loss to EC’s Alyssa DeFiglio to win the title at No. 3 singles. The BHS sophomore won the first set in a tie-breaker and followed up at 6-2 in the second. Hoseus earned a spot in the finals with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Franklin County’s Tali Hunt.

Batesville senior Ellen Heppner was named all-conference with a second place finish at No. 1 singles. After wins against Shelby Yoe of South Dearborn and Greensburg’s Danielle Schroeder, Heppner faced East Central’s Abby Sweeney in the finals. Sweeney won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 and was named the conference Most Valuable Player.

The Lady Bulldogs lost a pair of three-set matches in the finals of doubles play - both to their East Central counterparts.

Emily Helvie and Ali Meyer defeated Bischoff and Stevens of South Dearborn in the second round to set a battle with Lady Trojans Kelly Weigel and Claire Struewing at No. 1 doubles. The Batesville duo won the first set 6-2, but Weigel and Struewing held off a pair of match points and went on to win the second 7-5. The Lady Trojans went on to win the super tie-breaker 10-6.

Clare Kern and Abby Ashton gave the Lady Trojans a sweep in doubles play by knocking off Batesville’s Brooke Bradford and Kelli Hartman at No. 2. Hartman and Bradford won the first set 6-4, but lost the second 4-6. Ashton and Kern won the super tie-breaker 10-7.
