The Batesville High School varsity basketball team closed out the regular season and capped senior night with a 68-56 victory over the Shelbyville Golden Bears.
“It was a good game to help prepare us for the upcoming sectional,” BHS head coach Aaron Garrett commented. “It was a physical game and I thought the guys responded pretty well.
“Senior night is always a special night. We get a chance to honor the young men for their contributions to the program. Quinn (Grimsley), Mike (Hoeing) and Mitchell (Taylor) have all been instrumental in our success this season,” he added.
The win over the Golden Bears is the 18th of the season for the Bulldogs and it did not come easy.
Batesville fell behind 6-4 and then outscored Shelbyville 12-4 to close out the first quarter.
Adam Eads hit a 3-pointer late in the second quarter to make it 31-26 margin at halftime.
Batesville’s lead grew to seven points on a pair of Bryan Hoeing free throws to open the third quarter.
The Golden Bears later tied the score at 41-41 with just over two minutes to play in the third. The Bulldogs answered with a 6-2 run to close the quarter and enter the final eight minutes with a 47-43 lead.
The Golden Bears would get only as close as six points the rest of the way. Batesville led by as many as 14 points at 64-50.
Bryan Hoeing set the pace for the Bulldogs with 34 points and 10 rebounds. Mike Hoeing turned in a solid effort with eight points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Grimsley led the team in rebounding with 11 boards.
The Golden Bears it a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to defeat the Bulldogs in the junior varsity game by a score of 41-38.
Bo Gowan led the Bulldogs in scoring with 13 points, including a 3-pointer to tie the score at 38-38. Evan Blanken was second on the team with 12 points.
The Bulldogs finished the season with a record of 12-8.
