BHS girls begin swim season 2-0

The Batesville Herald-Tribune

---- — The Batesville High School girls swim team picked up wins over South Dearborn and Switzerland County to begin the season. It is only the third time in school history the team has opened 2-0.

After a tough loss last year by just five points to South Dearborn, Batesville dominated the relay events and outscored the competition in 8 of the 11 swimming events to secure the victory. Batesville finished with 148 points followed by South Dearborn (125) and Switzerland County (37).

“Every point counts and the girls made the most of their opportunities tonight,” BHS coach TJ Greene commented. “They had fun and swam well.”

The Lady Bulldogs were led by a pair of freshmen - Taylor Villani and Emily Gutzwiller. Both girls scored 21 points, which is the maximum amount possible in a tri-meet.

“Our squad is going through a bit of a youth movement,” Greene commented. “Of the 15-members, only five are upperclassmen. We are fortunate that the five freshmen and five sophomores have tons of competitive swim experience.

“The versatility of the younger swimmers makes it easy to move swimmers around to different events for experience and still get positive results,” he added.

Villani broke the freshman record in both the 50 yard freestyle (Dunlevy 04-05) and 100 yard freestyle events. Hannah Cox set a new freshman record in the 100 fly (Hall 07-08) and Emily Gutzwiller set a new freshman standard in the 200 individual medley.

Varsity event winners included Cox (100 fly), Gutzwiller (200 IM, 100 breast) and Villani (50 free, 100 free). Batesville placed first in the 200 medley relay (Emily Weiler, Gutzwiller, Cox, Villani), 200 free relay (Cox, Audrey Hall, Sarah Espin, Elizabeth Weiler) and 400 free relay (Villani, Elizabeth. Weiler, Emily Weiler, Gutzwiller).

Swimmers taking second place honors were Espin (200 IM), Hall (50 free), Elizabeth Weiler (500 free) and Emily Weiler (100 back).

Junior varsity event winners were Maggie Schwettman (50 free, 100 back), Sarah Poltrack (100 free) and Lauren Caplinger (100 breast).
