Bulldogs need shootout to beat Tigers

The No. 17 ranked Lawrenceburg Tigers traveled to Batesville to take on the No. 13 ranked Bulldogs in boys varsity soccer action.

The game ended in a tie for the second time this week, which forced a shootout to determine a winner.

And for a second time the Bulldogs came out on top.

Batesville scored all five penalty kick shots and goalkeeper Sean Laker stopped one of the Lawrenceburg shots to secure the eastern Indiana Athletic Conference win by a score of 2-1.

The Bulldogs got involved in the attack early and maintained possession much of the first half, according to coach Chris Fox.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on any of the scoring opportunities until Andy Nolan redirected a deflected free kick into the Tiger goal to give Batesville the 1-0 halftime lead.

The Tigers were able to tie the score with a goal at the 11 minute mark.

Regulation time expired with the game knotted at 1-1.

"I was very pleased with how we played in the first half both offensively and defensively,” Fox commented. “We have struggled a bit the past couple games with how we start and have given up early goals.

“We started strong and had several scoring chances ... one even hitting the underside of the crossbar, but bouncing out,” he added.

The new conference format to settle ties with the shootout helps prepare teams for tournament play.

“The good news is that we were able to get the win and some additional shootout experience,” Fox noted. “I am extremely impressed and proud of our PK specialists.  The past two games we have taken a total of 11 penalty kicks in the shootouts and we have scored 10 of the 11.”

Scoring goals on the penalty kicks in the shootout were  Nolan, james Balser, Luis Davalos, John Krieger and Austin Meyer.
