Lady Twisters win Martinsville cross country title

Oldenburg boys finish fourth

The Oldenburg Academy Lady Twisters, who are ranked No. 2 for “Small Schools” by indianarunner.com, placed first in the 14-team Class A race at the Martinsville Artesian Classic.

The Lady Twisters finished with a team score of 57 points, which was 15 better than second place Silver Creek. Brown County was third with 102 followed by Lighthouse Christian with 120.

Oldenburg Academy’s balanced attack resulted in four runners placing in the Top 10.

Sarah Billingsley continued her winning ways by crossing the finish line in time of 18:43.

Meredith Maier was two places back in third with a time of 19:34. Rachel Billingsley and Ashley Sedler were just a couple seconds apart to place sixth and seventh, respectively. Madelyn Maier rounded out the scoring in 44th place overall.

Other runners for the Lady Twisters included Hallie Kile (76th) and Kirsten Stenger (89th).

Four days earlier on their home course, Oldenburg recorded a perfect score of 15 points to top Franklin County and Seton Catholic.

Sarah Billingsley led the team in first followed by Meredith Maier, Haleigh Reed, Rachel Billingsley and Sedler.

Other top 15 runners for OA included Madelyn Maier (9th), Jackie Unkrich (13th), Stenger (14th) and Sam Rohrig (15th).

Boys fourth at Martinsville

Oldenburg Academy freshman Curtis Eckstein is quickly making a name for himself on the high school circuit. He placed first in the Class A boys race at Martinsville with a winning time of 16:33.

Eckstein’s top finish help guide the Twisters to a fourth place team score of 143 points. South Dearborn was the team champion with 71 followed by Edgewood (106) and Silver Creek (138).

Justin Fledderman was also in the Top 10 for OA. He placed seventh overall with a time of 17:01. Luke Wukusick (42nd) and Jared Hasselbring (47th) were the next two Oldenburg runners to finish. Isaiah Frey was fifth on the team in 52nd.

Other runners for the OA were Gabe Frey (87th) and Chris Nurrenberg (91st).

The Twisters were winners at home against Seton Catholic and Franklin County. Oldenburg finished with a team score of 24 points followed by Seton with 52. The Wildcats were seven points back with 59.

Eckstein raced to the front of the field and placed first with a time of 18:18. Fledderman crossed the line third followed by Isaiah Frey (5th), Hasselbring (7th), Wukusick (8th) and Gabe Frey (9th).
