---- — Batesville and Oldenburg Academy do not meet often in sports, but when they do something is generally on the line.
On Saturday, the two girls’ soccer teams squared off to determine the champion of the Batesville Invitational.
The Lady Bulldogs continued their winning ways by knocking off OA by a score of 5-1.
It did not take lone for the coach Kyle Laker’s crew to get on the scoreboard. Mary Elizabeth Elkins scored for the Lady Bulldogs within the first five minutes on the contest.
The Lady Bulldogs continued to be the aggressor most of the first half. The result was a 4-1 halftime lead.
Elkins and Mary Gutzwiller scored two goals apiece in the first half for the Lady Lady Bulldogs. Elkins leads the team with 12 goals on the season.
Hannah Teaney scored OA’s lone goal on a penalty kick in the first half.
Batesville add just one goal in the second half. Brooke Rohlfing scored her seventh goal of the season on a 35 yard chip shot just out of the reach of the OA goalie.
Goalkeeper Rebecca Roell and the Lady Bulldog defense had another solid day. As a unit they have given up only three goals on the season, which includes two penalty kicks.
“It was nice to recapture the Invitation trophy this year,” BHS coach Kyle Laker commented. “The girl’s have worked so hard this season and in the off season, so it is nice to see the hard work being paid off.
Thinking back to last year, we were really struggling to find out identity. This year, we are able to make minor changes each game to try to seal up some of our weak areas and we continue to get better each and every day,” he added.
BHS advances with win over Centerville
The Lady Bulldogs got off to a slow start in the opener against Centerville, but made up for it in the second half.
After taking a slim 1-0 lead into halftime, the Lady Bulldogs scoredsix times in the second half to knock off Centerville 7-0.
Kelli Hartman scored on an assist by Brooke Rohlfing in the first half.
Second half goals were recorded by Elkins (2), Rohlfing, Sylvia Phillips, Emily Rose and Morgan Puente. Assists were credited to Puente, Phillips (2), Rohlfing (2), Elkins Kelsey Gausman and Megan Doll.
Roell anchored the defensive effort with a shutout in goal. It is her sixth on the season.
OA blanks Rising Sun
The Lady Twisters were not at their best in the first half against the Rising Sun Lady Shiners.
But it did not carry over into the second half.
The Lady Twisters scored five times and help Rising Sun scoreless to win 5-0 and advance to the finals.
Ella Lamping scored twice to lead the offensive attack. Other goals were scored by Haleigh Reed, Erica Geers and Olivia Lewis. Assists were credited to Emma Schulte, Teaney and Geers.
Goalkeeper Reagan Weberding provided the shutout for OA.
