Timonera two-time runner up at IHSAA state finals

BATESVILLE — It was a good Friday night at the Indiana High School Athletic Association state finals for the Batesville High School senior Bryce Timonera.

And it got even better for the BHS swimmer at Saturday’s championship round at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Seeded third because of the results from the preliminary races in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events, Timonera moved up one place in each event to take home a pair of runner-up honors.

Timonera was second to Northridge’s Austin Flagler with a time of 20.83 in the 50 free. Flagler touched the wall in a winning time of 20.37.

In the 100 freestyle, Chesterton’s Blake Pieroni set a new meet record with a time of 44.28. Timonera was second with a time of 45.80, which was just ahead of Carmel’s Astashinsky (45.81).

“It truly is an end of an era,” BHS head coach TJ Greene commented. “The fact that he was able to do this without facilities necessary for basic training - much less elite training. It is satisfying to know we have overcome adversity to succeed ...

“When people think of the challenges to success, they would be even more impressed at our (team’s) and Bryce’s success,” he added.

The two second place finishes also earned the Bulldogs a 15th place among the 56 scoring teams.

This is the highest finish ever for BHS at the state finals, according to Greene.  The Bulldogs were 27th in 2010 and 23rd in 2011. Last year, the Bulldogs were 17th.

Timonera’s times at this year’s state finals puts him among some of the best ever.

The BHS standout now ranks 14th all-time with his time in the 50 yard freestyle, while his 100 yard time is tied for 19th best.

Greene’s reflection

“I remember when he wasn’t taken seriously as a competitive swimmer, even though he qualified for big-time state meets.  It really was a special time back when he was coming up and turning all those heads.  It was like him and me against the establishment, taking away awards, titles and state records away from big name programs who had all the tools at their fingertips to succeed.  What a neat time it was to experience that in real time and see the transformation from season to season and year to year.”

Team competition

The Chesterton Trojans won four individual events and two relays to accumulate 238.5 points to take the top spot at the state finals. It was the school’s third state championship in six years under head coach Kevin Kinel.

North Central placed second with 203.5 points followed by Carmel with 173. Timonera’s 34 points put the Bulldogs in 15th.
