Batesville High School senior Virginia “Ginny” Westerfeld was the southeastern Indiana star of the IHSAA girls’ state track and field meet Friday, June 6, at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex, Indiana University, Bloomington.
In the 100-meter dash preliminaries, she finished sixth with a qualifying time of 12.49 seconds. Even though she bettered that time to 12.40 seconds in the final race, that earned her eighth place.
Westerfeld competed again soon after in the 200-meter dash preliminaries. A time of 27.97 seconds put her in 26th place out of 27 so she did not advance to the final.
With a time of 50.87 seconds, the BHS 4 x 100-meter relay of junior Kimberly Tidman, freshman Sophie Meadows, Westerfeld and her triplet sister, Michaela, placed 23rd out of 27 teams competing.
In the 400-meter dash, Milan High School junior Grace Herzog finished 21st out of 27 with a time of 59.63 seconds.

OA senior Meredith Maier was 20th out of 27 800-meter run competitors at 2:21.44.
In the long jump preliminaries, Lady Bulldog Tidman’s best jump was 16-07.75, placing her 18th out of 30, below the top 10 group to move on to the final.
After 16 events were scored, the 73 participating teams with points were ranked. With 2 points, Batesville tied for 64th (along with Portage, Merrillville, Tell City, Northview and Zionsville).
