Sectional win for Bulldogs

The weather was almost perfect as was the Batesville boys’ track and field team, reported coach Lisa Gausman.

“The Bulldogs had many amazing performances to score above and beyond my expectations .... (This) gave Batesville High School enough points to be crowned sectional champions,” she announced.

“According the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Batesville has won the sectional meet one other time, and that was in 1932. I am so proud of these boys. They came into this meet with such determination and desire, and I am so proud to be their coach.

“The seedings before the meet said the Bulldogs were projected to score 145 points, but they scored an incredible 161 points. This awesome victory came with the Bulldogs only having one sectional individual champion, Peter Heil, in the 300m hurdles,” the coach revealed.

Batesville had many sectional runner-up and top four finishes. The top four in each event automatically qualify for the regional competition. The Bulldogs have 15 out of 16 events with individuals competing at the regional level.

Those qualifying and advancing to regionals are Tanner Ayette and Jacob Koehne, 100m dash; Tanner Ayette and Michael Tunny, 200m dash; Peter Heil and Matt Dennis, 110m hurdles; Peter Heil and Matt Dennis, 300m hurdles; Michael Tunny, 400m dash; Garrett Yorn and Connor Bell, 800m run; Cole Nuhring, 1600m run; Caleb Moster and Chris Riffle, 3200m run; Tom Chaffee and Nathan Longstreth, high jump; Peter Heil, long jump; Ben Westerfeld and Nathan Bedel, pole vault; and Kevin Bedel, discus.

Three relay teams will also compete: 4 x 100m – Clayton McKinley, Michael Tunny, Jacob Koehne and Tanner Ayette (alternates Zach Mears, Alex Jorgensen, Ben Westerfeld and Jared Ilderton); 4 x 400m – Nathan Longstreth, John Moody, Tanner Ayette and Peter Heil (alternates Michael Tunny, Garrett Yorn, Alex Jorgensen and Matt Dennis); 4 x 800m – Cole Nuhring, Caleb Moster, Connor Bell and Garrett Yorn (alternates Calvin Lehman, Chris Riffle, Trent Barnett and Clay Yeaton).
