Lady Twisters escape first round with victory over South Decatur

The Herald-Tribune

BATESVILLE — The Oldenburg Academy Lady Twisters escaped with a 66-57 victory in the opening round of the IHSAA Sectional No. 60 basketball tournament at Jac-Cen-Del High School.

What appeared to be a routine victory for the Oldenburg Academy Lady Twisters took a drastic turn at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Oldenburg held a comfortable 17 point lead at the conclusion of the third quarter against the South Decatur Lady Cougars.

It all seemed to be going their way even as the third quarter came to a close. Shots were falling from all over the floor. Sarah Gutman brought out a big smile from coach Dan Kerker and others on the bench when she buried 3-pointer from the corner with :24 on clock. Gutman’s basket made it 43-26.

Both teams countered with a pair of points as the quarter ended 45-28.

That is when things got interesting.

The Lady Cougars changed their approach at both ends of the floor and rattled off 12 unanswered points to cut the deficit to 45-40.

Kirsten Ricke ended the OA scoring drought with a field goal at the 5:34 mark.

The two teams battled back and forth with the Lady Cougars drawing within two points on three occasions.

If it were not for the play of Oldenburg’s Ella Lamping it could have been a different story. Leading 48-46, Lamping scored the team’s next six points to help keep some distance.

A 3-pointer by South’s Megan Niese made it 54-53 at the 2:20 mark.

The Lady Cougars would not get any closer.

South called a time-out right after Niese’s field goal and it proved beneficial for the Lady Twisters as they were able to regroup.

Lamping and Kirsten Ricke combined to score eight unanswered points as the Lady Twisters regained a 62-53 with just under a minute to play.

South would not get any closer than seven points the rest of the way.

The Lady Twisters improved to 11-10 on the season and will play Rising Sun (12-8) in the semifinals on Friday.
