Bulldogs add another conference victory

Batesville 75, South Dearborn 37

The Herald-Tribune

— It was a little more relaxing night for the Batesville High School boys varsity basketball team.

Coming off a two-point victory against East Central, the Bulldogs traveled to Aurora to battle the South Dearborn Knights.

The Bulldogs set the tone from the start and went on to post a 75-37 victory.

Defensively, the Bulldogs were better. The Knights struggled to get good looks at the basket and managed only five points over the first eight minutes. They did not reach double figures until well into the second quarter.

Batesville’s lead grew to as many as 29 points before settling at 43-16 when halftime horn sounded.

The Bulldogs experienced some confusion defensively in the third quarter, but still held the Knights to 12 points as the period closed at 56-28.

Field goals by Matt Dennis, Mike Hoeing and Bryan Hoeing stretched the margin to 34 points early in the fourth quarter.

“I was extremely pleased with the defensive effort in the first quarter and into the second,” BHS head coach Aaron Garrett commented. “Our hardwork on their end led to better offense at ours.

“In the second half we worked on a few things that will help us as the season progresses,” he added.

The Bulldogs were able to mix some zone defense in with their man-to-man. They were also able to press some early in each half.

Bryan Hoeing led the Bulldogs with 18 points followed by Wes McKinney with 13. Matt Dennis (12) and Quinn Grimsley (10) were also in double figures.

The Batesville junior varsity bounced back from a tough loss to the Trojans with a 30-20 conference win over the Knights.

Despite the game staying relatively close, the Bulldogs were never really challenged from the start.

The Bulldogs led by six points at each of the first two quarter breaks and then by 13 at the end of three.

Evan Blanken led the Bulldogs in scoring with seven points, while Cody Reer and Matt Moorman added six apiece. Dustin Nobbe had a team-high six rebounds, while Moorman recorded three steals.
