The Indiana Heat team won the Midwest Youth Tournaments (www.midwestyouthtournaments.com) eighth-grade girls national basketball championship June 14-15 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Parent Jennie Meyer explained, “In tourneys you play pool games to get seeded into the tourney, which determine who you play in the actual tourney from the other pools. We won two pool games and lost one pool game and got the second seed in our pool.
“Then we played the actual bracket tourney games all on Sunday.” The pool games and seeding are similar to the NCAA.
Indiana Heat defeated Louisville Focus 52-41, then the Louisville Jaguars 46-32. The score still wasn’t close (61-54) when they triumphed over Kentucky Premier in the championship game.
The team will travel to Orlando, Florida, July 7-12 to compete in the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) National Championships.
“It is a very big tourney for travel teams,” according to Meyer.
