---- — The season has been extended another week for four Batesville High School wrestlers.
The top four finishers from the Franklin County and Tri high schools traveled to Richmond to compete in the regional tournament last Saturday.
Again, the top four finishers get a chance to move on to the semistate.
The Batesville Bulldogs had five wrestlers hit the mat in Richmond and will have four compete on Saturday at the New Castle Semistate.
Two will be competing at the semistate at runner-ups, while the other two will face a tough challenge as fourth place finishers.
Freshman Michael Deal found himself in the middle of a battle for the regional title in his first appearance at 113-lbs. Cam Coffman of Union County pinned Deal in the championship match.
Deal faced off first against Richmond senior Blake Hillard in the his opening match and walked off with a second period pin. His second match on the day was against Brandon Miller of Tri High. A second pin on the day was Deal’s 25th of the season, which tied him for the school record.
Batesville senior Ben Westerfeld made his way to the championship match at 132-lbs. Westerfeld lost a 4-1 decision to Alston Bane of Richmond.
Westerfeld pinned Brent Morris in the second period of his opening round match. Westerfeld's second match on the day was against Lawrenceburg rival Adam Oyler. The BHS senior pinned Oyler in the first period to earn a spot in the finals.
Neal Nobbe placed fourth in the 160-lb. weight division. Nobbe lost in the match for third place to Connersville’s Cody Steele by a 5-0 decision.
Nobbe beat Chance Faith of Tri high by a score of 11-5 to advance to the semifinals. Nobbe suffered a 7-2 loss to New Castle’s Luke Decker in the second round. The loss moved Nobbe to the consolation against Steele.
Junior Will Amberger qualified for the semistate with a fourth place in the 170-lb. class. Amberger lost his match for third place to Milan’s Donny Hoffrogge.
Amberger opened the tournament against Knightstown's Brian Orcutt. Amberger wrestled his way to a 7-2 victory ove Orcutt. Amberger lost to Emelio Morales of Union County in round two, which moved him to the consolation round.
Batesville sophomore Levi Nordmeyer competed in the 182-lb. class . Nordmeyer lost his first round match to Brennan Harper of Knightstown.
Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference wrestlers winning regional titles were Tristenn Miller (Rushville), Layne Harnishfeger (Franklin County), Garrett Hittle (Rushville), Colton Gonzales (Connersville), Max Dole (East Central), Charlie Hill (Lawrenceburg), Jake Ruberg (Lawrenceburg), Nathan Boggs (South Dearborn) and Cainan Schaefer (South Dearborn).
