Bulldogs open up with easy win over Jac-Cen-Del

The Herald-Tribune

BATESVILLE — It was a solid start to the boys basketball season for the Batesville Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs opened on the road in Osgood against the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles and left with a convincing 77-38 victory.

The Batesville win was a result of a “solid defense along with great effort and intensity at both ends of the floor,”commented BHS head coach Aaron Garrett.

The tone coach Garrett hoped to set was evident from the start. The Bulldogs pushed the pace of the game at both ends.

The first quarter closed with BHS top 20-14.

The lead continued to grow as time passed in the second quarter. By halftime, the Bulldogs were up 43-26.

Batesville had a comfortable lead, but an 18-0 run to close the third quarter and begin the fourth put the game out of reach. A 21 point lead grew to 69-30 before JCD’s Cord Comer scored at the 5:55 mark in the fourth.

An improved effort at the defensive end was a key to the run. Garrett’s crew held the Eagles to only four points in the third quarter and eight in the fourth.

Five different players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Bryan Hoeing led the way with 17 points followed by Matt Dennis with 12. Quinn Grimsley and Mike Hoeing each added 11 points, while Kassidy Kase finished with 10. Grimsley led the team with eight assists and Mike Hoeing had five.

Defensively, the Bulldogs forced 28 Eagle turnovers and recorded 21 steals. Mike Hoeing led the team with six steals and a blocked shot. Grimsley was not far behind with five steals.

There were a number of new faces on the court for the Bulldogs with a few familiar ones.

“We are pretty young and this was the first real varsity experience for many of them,” Garrett commented. “Add to the mix the experience and leadership of the three seniors and we look forward to the season ahead.”

The Bulldogs will be tested right away with a pair of conference games this weekend, including a Saturday meeting with the No. 1 team in Class 3A. Batesville travels to Franklin County on Friday and follows up at Greensburg one night later.

The Batesville junior varsity kicked off the evening with a 44-30 win over the Eagles.

Wes McKinney scored seven first quarter points as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-6 lead.

The Eagles kept it an eight point game at each of the next two quarter breaks before the Bulldogs stretched the final margin to 14 points.

Freshman Matt Moorman set the pace offensively for the Bulldogs with 13 points followed closely by Blake Walsman with 12.
