RUSHVILLE – The Lady Bulldogs broke open a close game by outscoring South Dearborn 18-4 in the third quarter en route to the 40-23 victory in the basketball sectional semifinal at Rushville.
The Lady Bulldogs advanced to face Rushville, 69-45 winners over Lawrenceburg in the first semifinal.
Batesville’s Brooke Bradford opened the scoring with a 3-pointer. The Lady Knights responded with a traditional three-point play. A Kooper Vertz 3- pointer gave the Lady Knights their first lead.
Batesville regained the lead on a bucket by Brooke Rohlfing late in the first quarter.
After South Dearborn went up 8-7 on a drive by Morgan Wolfer, Bradford hit a free throw to tie the game 8-8 after one quarter.
Batesville took the lead for good on four straight points by Bradford. A rebound bucket by Samantha Heidlage pushed the Batesville lead to 14-8.
South Dearborn stopped the run as Ellen Barrett scored and drew the foul.
She was unable to complete the three-point play. Struggles at the charity stripe haunted the Lady Knights the entire game. South Dearborn was 1-for- 8 from the free throw line in the first half.
The Lady Knights closed to 21-19 on a Wolfer 3-pointer with less than one minute to play in the half. Batesville got a free throw by Jessica Wagers to hold the 22-19 half-time lead.
The Lady Bulldogs put the game away in the third. Batesville scored the first eight points, Bailey Baumer’s free throws started the spurt and Shelby Rupp’s bucket capped it with the Lady Bulldogs leading 30-21.
Following a bucket by Emily Townsend for the Lady Knights, Batesville scored the next seven points. Rohlfing’s bucket gave the Lady Bulldogs a commanding 37-21 lead. Wolfer’s bucket was the last points of the quarter for South Dearborn as Batesville led 40-23 heading to the fourth.
Batesville looked to use the clock to their advantage in a low-scoring fourth quarter. The Lady Bulldogs held South Dearborn to just five points in the final eight minutes to advance to the sectional final, 47-28.
Bradford led Batesville with 15 points followed by Rohlfing 12, Rupp 10, Chelsey Paul three, Rebecca Roell two, Baumer two and Heidlage two.
The Lady Knights were led by Wolfer with nine. Townsend and Barrett both had six.
