Bulldogs need late basket to beat Beech Grove

The Herald-Tribune

— The Batesville High School boys varsity basketball team has struggled in some games this season, but still found a way to come out on top.

That was again the case on Saturday when the Bulldogs hosted the Beech Grove Hornets.

The Bulldogs led most of the game, but needed a last second shot by sophomore Blake Walsman to give them a 53-51 win over the pesky Hornets.

The Hornets scored six unanswered points and tied the game at 51-51 on a pair of free throws by Jalen Dyson with just under a minute to play in the game.

The Bulldogs gave the ball back to the Hornets and they held for a late shot. The Hornets returned the favor and the Bulldogs capitalized.

Batesville took advantage of Beech Grove’s missed opportunity as Mike Hoeing drove the length of the floor and found an open Walsman under the basket for the game-winner.

“Not a pretty game on our part,” BHS head coach Aaron Garrett commented. “We need to do a better job taking care of the basketball, especially on key possessions.

“Still, they were able to come up with a big play at the end of the game to pull it out,” he added.

The Bulldogs did not respond well to the physical play early in the game, but still managed to hold a three point lead at the end of the first quarter and a slim 25-24 advantage at halftime.

The BHS lead grew to eight points by the end of the third quarter only to have the Hornets chip away at it in the fourth.

A poor night shooting from the free throw line did not help, especially when the opponent hits 10-of-10 attempts. The Bulldogs were just 6-of-15 from the stripe.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Bryan Hoeing with 18 points and Matt Dennis with 12. Walsman was also in double figures with 11.

The varsity squad improved to 17-2 on the season.

The Batesville junior varsity fell behind early in the game and could not make it all the way back.

The Bulldogs were defeated 52-49 by the Hornets.

Batesville was outscored 16-8 in the second quarter and trailed 27-20 at halftime. The deficit was only four points by the end of the third quarter.

Matt Moorman scored a team-high 13 points followed by Bo Gowan with 10.

The BHS junior varsity fell to 12-7 with the loss.
