Bulldogs win sixth consecutive Ripley County title

— The Batesville High School boys basketball team became the first program to claim six consecutive Ripley County tiles in the tournament’s 89-year history.

A 47-31 victory over the Milan Indians on Saturday night in Versailles is also the 11th championship in 13 seasons.

“It is a good win for the team, but also a memorable win for the program,” BHS head coach Aaron Garrett commented. “We knew Milan would come out ready to play and they were.

“We struggled to hit shots against their zone. We kept battling and eventually found the basket,” he added.

Hampered by a few injuries, the Bulldogs relied on a variety of combinations to get the job done.

“We got solid contributions from a number of different players,” Garrett commented. “We can go deep down the bench with talented players and that was evident in this one.”

Defensively, the Bulldogs held the Indians to only three points in the first quarter and 10 for the entire first half. The Bulldogs held a 19-10 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was better offensively for the Bulldogs. Batesville went on a 7-0 run to open the third quarter and set the tone. The lead later grew to 17 points (31-14) on a field goal by sophomore Bryan Hoeing.

The Indians continued to battle and kept the game within reach by outscoring the Bulldogs 7-6 to close the third quarter.

The Bulldogs were not very efficient from the free throw line through the first three quarters and those struggles continued in the fourth. Batesville was 8-of-14 from the charity stripe over the final eight minutes. Matt Dennis scored the team’s only field goal of the quarter, but the 10 points proved to be enough to preserve the victory.

For the game, the Bulldogs had their chances from the free throw line, but made only 19 of 35 attempts.

The Bulldogs had only one player – Bryan Hoeing – score in double figures with 12 points. Wes McKinney was second n the team with nine points followed by Dennis with eight.

Junior Logan Karstetter was Milan’s top scorer with 12 points, while Jon Bixler added eight.

Bulldogs open with

win over Raiders

The Bulldogs spoiled host South Ripley’s hopes for a county title with a 60-38 victory in round one.

Senior Mike Hoeing led the Bulldogs offensively with 16 points followed by brother Bryan with 12.

The Bulldogs were again solid defensively holding the Raiders to four first quarter points and 12 for the half. Batesville countered with 12 points in each quarter, which was good for a 12 point halftime lead.

The lead grew by three points over the next eight minutes and the Bulldogs pulled away with a 20-point fourth quarter. Seven different players scored for Garrett’s crew in final quarter.
