Season ends at regional for Batesville golfers

McCreary comes up short of advancing

The Batesville Lady Bulldogs were among some of the best golf teams in the state on Saturday at the New Castle Regional held at Westwood Golf Course.

Six of the state’s Top 20 ranked teams were among the 18 fighting for a spot in the IHSAA state finals field. The top three teams and the top five low individuals excluding those advancing with a team qualify for the state finals.

Considering the abundance of talented teams, the Lady Bulldogs chances of making it to the finals as a team were slim. They were able to place 14th with a team score of 380, which just two strokes behind Fishers. Teams falling in behind coach Tom Meyer’s crew were Delta (391), Chatard (395), Lawrence North (412) and Muncie South (440).

The best chance for Batesville to be represented at the state finals came with junior Madison McCreary.

McCreary, who has consistently been one of the top players in the area, entered the day as one of the players expected to compete for a state finals spot.

The BHS junior came up just short in a three person playoff for the final berth. McCreary carded an 18-hole score of 81 as did Alexa West (Whiteland) and Lindsey Hackleman (Connersville). West won the playoff to keep the two Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference players from advancing.

McCreary battled her way to a one-over-par score of 37 on the front nine to conclude her round, while two holes caused her problems on the back (her first nine) left her with a 44. She finished with three birdies and seven pars.

Madison Harsh was second on the team for the Lady Bulldogs with a 98 followed by Isabella Stange with a personal best of 99. Other scores for Batesville included Gabby Cooper with a 102 and Samantha Heidlage with a 111.

Other EIAC schools represented were Rushville and Greensburg. Catie Liggett led the Lady Lions with an 83, while Abbey Gulde carded a 105. Greensburg’s lone representative was Britney Biltz with a 94.
