Bulldogs hand Tigers 34-6 loss

The Batesville Herald-Tribune

---- — The wins keep stacking up for the Batesville High School football team.

What was expected to be a key divisional match-up inside the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference did not really turn out to be as close as expected.

And that was good news for the Bulldogs.

Batesville traveled to Lawrenceburg Friday night and left with a convincing 34-6 over the Tigers.

The BHS defense was again a key to the victory.

The Bulldogs intercepted Tiger quarterback Sam Fette four times with one being returned for a touchdown.

Ben Wilson picked Fette twice and tipped another ball that was chased down by teammate Connor Dickey.Wilson’s second interception came in the early in the fourth quarter and was returned 55 yards for a touchdown. Colin Brown also intercepted a Fette pass deep in Bulldog territory to end a possible scoring opportunity.

Constant pressure early in the game by Seth Williamson, Cody Reer and Brown took the Tigers out of their up-tempo style.

Brown finished the night with a team-high eight solo tackles and six assists. Reer was close behind with seven solo and five assists, while Dickey tallied five solo and five assists.

Despite a couple turnovers in Lawrenceburg territory, including one on the goal line, The Bulldogs were able to move the ball on the ground with relative ease.

After a scoreless first quarter, placekicker Peter Heil put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a 29-yard field goal with 7:09 to play in the half.

The Bulldogs came up with a couple stops on defense and then BHS senior Boston Gowan turned in one of the biggest plays of the night.

The Bulldogs were pinned back at the 14 yard line. Gowan took the ball from quarterback Connor Schuck, weaved his way through traffic and made his way to the end zone 86 yards later. The Tigers had chances to bring the BHS running back down at different stages in the run, but failed to execute.

The Tigers scored their only touchdown of the game four plays later on a 48-yard pass from Fette to Zach Steuer.

The Bulldogs got the ball back and added three more points on a 32-yard field goal by Heil as time expired.

The first half ended with the Bulldogs in front 13-6.

Schuck, Wilson and Austin Westerfeld scored second half touchdowns to help preserve the victory. Schuck’s came on a 10-yard run, while Westerfeld scampered 32 yards with just over seven minutes to play.

For the game, Gowan finished with 196 yards on 13 carries, while Westerfeld racked up 89 yards and Schuck had 72.

The Bulldogs are now 2-0 in the Class 3A division of the conference and 6-0 overall.

It is not a position this senior class is very familiar. They have gone the previous five seasons with losing records. The win against Lawrenceburg guarantees them a winning campaign in 2013.
