BHS boys record another shutout

The Batesville Herald-Tribune

---- — The defensive unit continues to excel and the offensive group is doing their part to keep the Batesville High School boys soccer team undefeated on the season.

The Bulldogs tallied their school record 10th shutout in 13 games as they knocked off Greenfield-Central by a score of 1-0.

“Our defense continues to be formidable and was well organized,” BHS coach Chris Fox commented. “I am so impressed with how much our defense has improved and continues to get better.

“They are really starting to work well together and understand each other’s role. Seth Parker made several top notch saves that preserved another shut out adding to the record breaking season. I cannot be more proud of this team,” he added.

Ten minutes into the match, Batesville was awarded a direct free kick about 24 yards from the Cougar goal. Luis Davalos stood over the ball and lined up the shot. Davalos bent it around the Cougar defensive wall and just out of the reach of the diving GC keeper.

Despite the relentless Cougar attack in the second half, the Bulldogs were up to the challenge, according to Fox.

“This was a great test for us especially with several players out or nursing injuries,” Fox added. “Luis has been outstanding all year and has really stepped up his game.”

Two days earlier, the varsity Bulldogs were 3-0 winners over the Greensburg Pirates.

The Bulldogs got a pair of first half goals from Austin Schutte to give them a 2-0 lead at the break. The first goal was assisted by Josh Keith and the second by John Hamm.

Wade Volk added a goal in the second half off an assist by Ben Locker.

“Although this was not our best performance offensively, we continue to play well defensively,” Fox commented. “ With all the injuries we’ve picked up lately, our line-up has been ever evolving.

“It is good to see we continue to spread the scoring around. The Keith to Schutte cross on the first goal was extremely well executed,” he added.

BHS junior varsity wins 1-0

The Batesville High School junior varsity soccer team recorded a 1-0 victory over Greenfield-Central. It is the eighth win of the season for the Bulldogs.

Much of the first half would see alternating periods of possession for each team. Neither team was able to capitalize with a goal before halftime, but Batesville was able to out shoot Greenfield-Central 8-4 in the first half, according to coach Josh Meyer.

Alex Todd scored the game’s only goal at the 18:47 mark in the second half.

Brandon Rose and Kevin Koury shared time in goal for the Bulldogs. Rose finished with a pair of saves in 58 minutes of play.

The Batesville defense was led by the back four of Batta, Brandt, Grossman, and Dunbar, according to Meyer.

“This was the biggest test so far this season for this JV squad,” Meyer commented. “Greenfield-Central played a very organized style of play and had some very talented players on the field.

“The team rose to the pressure and put together a very solid performance for the entire 70 minutes,” he added.
