Trojans beat Bulldogs in championship game

The two top teams in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference squared off in the Class 2A Sectional 26 championship in Madison.

The Trojans emerged victorious by a score of 3-1.

East Central capitalized on a Bulldog defensive clearance that ended up in a dangerous spot at the top of the box less than two minutes into the game, according to BHS coach Chris Fox.

Trojan forward Sam Burns gathered in the loose ball, buried the shot to the upper corner of the goal and just out of reach of the diving Seth Parker.

The Bulldogs continued to battle and the game remained 1-0 for much of the first half. With 18 minutes remaining, the Bulldogs earned a corner kick. Thomas Hertel took the kick and sent a ball towards the far post. Luis Davalos timed his run and jump perfectly heading the ball into the EC goal to even the score.

The scored remained 1-1 at the intermission.

The second half was again a very tight game with both teams playing quality soccer, according to Fox.

With 24 minutes left in the game and the score still tied, a collision between Batesville’s Austin Meyer and Trojan Keith Batta resulted in an extended injury stoppage. Batta was able to return to the game, but Meyer was not. The Bulldogs struggled to get back into a rhythm after the break in action.

The Trojans took the lead with 18 minutes remaining in the game and added another on a penalty kick a couple minutes later.

“This was a tough game against a quality opponent,” Fox commented. “Coming into the match we knew we had to play extremely well and not make many mistakes.

“Despite the loss, I am so proud of this team and it has been an incredible season. These players have worked really hard this year and should be extremely proud of what they have accomplished this year,” he added.

The Bulldogs finished the season 15-2-1 with the only two losses coming to the Trojans.
