Trojans triumph in key EIAC game

The Batesville High School boys varsity soccer team traveled to St. Leon for a game that would determine the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference champion.

It was competitive and it was hard-fought by both sides. The host Trojans emerged victorious with a 2-0 decision over the Bulldogs.

The two teams played even for the first 30 minutes before the Trojans gained a one goal advantage.

Despite the goal, Batesville continued to press the attack and played well, according to BHS coach Chris Fox.

The second half did not start as well for the Bulldogs. The Trojans scored their second goal early in the period.

“The first half was fun to watch and some good quality soccer,” Fox commented. “We were very pleased with how we played and our effort despite the one goal.

“The early second half goal was disappointing and really took us out of our game as we began to force the play and EC was able to sit back and defend. We really felt we had a chance tonight, but it just wasn’t meant to be,” he added.

East Central’s two goal lead was more than the Bulldogs could overcome.

“We struggled to get our offense going and with the lead the Trojan defense stepped up to deny Batesville any good looks,” Fox noted.

Now second place in the conference is in play.

“Now we must focus on our final game of the season against Connersville,” Fox commented. “This game will determine second place in the conference...and we need to get a positive result to regain some momentum and confidence going into the post season.

“Although this wasn’t our best performance, I am still very proud of this team and believe we can have a great post season,” he added.
