The Batesville High School tennis team suffered a 4-1 loss at Shelbyville to close the regular season.
The lone win came at No. 3 singles. Blake Walsman needed three sets to beat Tyler Land 3-6, 6-1 and 6-3.
In junior varsity action, Spencer Rose, Paul Ritter, Harsh Patel, Luan Arnold and Justin Garcia all won singles matches. Brett Westerfeld and Beau Brown teamed up to win at doubles as did Brandon Laker and Jonathan Kunkel.
The varsity is now 12-7 on the season, while the junior varsity closed out the season 11-1-1.
The Bulldogs won three of the five positions at the annual Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference.
Walsman recorded the team’s only win in singles play. The BHS junior won two matches at No. 3 singles on Saturday for the title. After drawing a first-round bye, he defeated East Central’s Connor Paul in the second round and followed up with a 6-0 and 6-0 victory over Franklin County’s Garrett Crowe in the finals.
The No. 1 doubles team of Nick Kirschner and Henry Luchow claimed the title with a 6-2 and 6-2 win over Greensburg’s Tom Lawrence and Kyle Colson. The Batesville duo defeated East Central earlier in the day and a team from Franklin County on Thursday.
Jacob Paul and Matt Taylor earned a bye at No. 2 doubles to avoid play in Thursday’s opening round. They followed up with a round two win over South Dearborn and a 6-0 and 6-4 victory over Kevin Beaver and Keegan McCullough in the championship.
Mugline:Bulldogs top Cougars
The Bulldogs picked up a 3-2 on the road at Greenfield-Central.
The Bulldogs were winners at No. 2 and 3 singles as well at No. 2 doubles.
Kirschner defeated Brandon Hull in straight sets 6-3 and 6-3 at No. 2. It was Walsman over Thomas Spears 6-3 and 6-1 at No. 3.
Paul and Taylor did not take long to dispose of Baley Hull and Zach Wright 6-0 and 6-2.
The BHS junior varsity was an 8-0 winner.
Brown and Schwettman won a pair of singles matches, while Westerfeld and Rose each won one. Ritter and Patel teamed up for two victories in doubles play.
