Lady Bulldogs advance with third place finish at sectional

Realistically, there were nine teams battling for one spot to advance the New Castle Golf Regional.

The top three teams from Saturday’s sectional at Greensburg would qualify, but unless something unforeseen happened Columbus North and Columbus East were going to fill the top two spots.

And it played out just as expected.

The Columbus North Lady Bull Dogs won the team title by a slim two stoke margin over East. North finished the day with a team score of 344.

The Batesville Lady Bulldogs won the race for the third spot and did so with relative ease.

Junior Madison McCreary carded an 18-hole score of 79 to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a third place finish and a team score of 373. McCreary’s score was also good enough for third overall individually.

Greensburg was fourth in the team competition with a 389 followed by Rushville (391), East Central (428) and Oldenburg Academy (431).

McCreary, who recently recorded a school record 73 at the conference tournament, got off to a shaky start with a 42 on the front nine, but bounced back to card a two-over-par 37 on the back.

The Lady Bulldogs got a balanced effort from the next three golfers.

Gabby Cooper was second on the team with a 95, which included nines of 46 and 49. Meg Liter was next in line with a 99, while Madison Harsh added a 100. Samantha Heidlage was the fifth golfer for coach Tom Meyer.

The Lady Twisters were led by Meghan Gray with a score of 101, which included a 50 on the front nine and a 51 on the back.

Gabrielle Mungcal was second on the team with a 105 followed by Miranda Hillenbrand (111) and Caroline Storms (114). Taylor McGraw was the team’s fifth golfer for coach Tim Maple.

The East Central Lady Trojans were led by Skylar McMahon with a 101 and Brittanie Bolten with a 103.

The tournament’s individual medalist was Columbus North’s Sydney Anderson with a two-over-par score of 72. Greensburg’s Brittany Biltz was second with a 78.
