Twisters lose to Clay City 66-46 in regional

The Batesville Herald-Tribune

---- — The Oldenburg Academy boys varsity basketball team suffered a 66-46 loss to Clay City in the first round of the Class A regional at Martinsville.

Coach Gary Moorman’s crew had relied heavily on 3-point shooting and limiting their turnovers, a recipe that helped produce 13 wins over the course of the season.

This time the shots were not falling from the perimeter and a few untimely turnovers led to Clay City points. The Twisters managed only four 3-pointers for the game. Drew Kloepfer hit one late in the first quarter. Two came from Cory Schuman to help spark a run in the third, while the other was made by Kurt Sarringhaus late in the fourth.

It was the Eels that capitalized on some pinpoint shooting from the perimeter to establish a nice lead. The Eels hit six 3-pointers in the first half -- three each from Evan Rogers and Trevor Singer.

The Twisters trailed 20-11 at the end of the first quarter and later 35-21 at halftime.

Oldenburg was able to close the gap to six points on a three-point play by Matt Moorman with 2:18 to play in the third quarter.

The Eels countered with the final five points of the third quarter and the first eight of the fourth period to regain a 55-36 lead. The Eels got a big lift from sophomore guard Noah Denker. Denker hit a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer to slow the OA charge and jumpstart the 13-0 run.

A pair of Kurt Sarrighaus free throws at the 4:57 mark put an end to the Clay City 13-0 run. The free throws made it 55-38.

The Clay City lead later grew to as many as 22 points.

Moorman was able to crack the Clay City defense in the second quarter with dribble penetration, which led to seven of his team-high 14 points. Clay City did a nice job covering the shootings on the perimeter, which made knocking down three point shots difficult.

The Twisters finish the season with a record of 13-10, while Clay City (20-6) went on to defeat Greenwood Christian 66-65 in the championship game.
